Weekly Shabbat Morning Programs

Minyan Katan: Children 5 and under

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for this fun, energetic and engaging Shabbat experience. In creative Shabbat morning experience, children and their families will sing, dance, hear stories, and learn about Shabbat in an interactive and participatory environment. At Minyan Katan, children and their families will experience the joy of Shabbat in a warm and educational atmosphere.

Minyan Katan is lead on alternating Shabbatot by Hadar Schwartz and Alana Bloom.

Hadar Schwartz brings her energy, enthusiasm, and great knowledge of Judaism to our Minyan Katan program. She is a first-year doctoral student in CUNY's Clinical Psychology Program and a graduate of Barnard College. Hadar has worked with children of all ages in a range of capacities including as a babysitter, Tot Shabbat leader, teacher, and camp counselor. She is excited to continue working with the children of Shaare Zedek and creating a meaningful and educational Shabbat experience for them.

Alana Bloom is delighted to join the Shaare Zedek community as a leader of Minyan Katan. As a teacher, babysitter, and mother’s helper, she has experience working with Jewish children ranging from birth through age 13. Alana is excited to share her dedication to Judaism and love for Shabbat with the children and families who participate in Minyan Katan. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Queens College and is half way through her masters degree in childhood education.

Minyan Gadol: 6-12 years-old

11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Children approaching the date of their bar/bat-mitzvah are encouraged to begin attending the main service with their parent(s).

This program offers a creative and fresh look at many of the morning prayers, and engaging discussions and activities in the theme of the weekly Torah portion and/or relevant holidays. It is an hour that will make your kids look forward to coming to synagogue and excited about being Jewish.

Minayn Gadol is led on alternating Shabbatot by Ory Rinat and Elyse Ross:

Ory Rinat returns for his fourth year leading MInyan Gadol at Shaare Zedek. He is a graduate of List College, the Joint Program with Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Ory spent a year in Israel on the NATIV Leadership Program, grew up speaking Hebrew at home in Queens and has extensive experience working with this children of this age.

Elyse Ross grew up in central New Jersey. She then moved on to Barnard College, where she graduated with a degree in political science. Currently, Elyse is a Teach For America corps member teaching 3rd grade in the South Bronx. This is her second year leading Minyan Gadol at Shaare Zedek
