Tishah B'Av
Wednesday, July 29 - Thursday, July 30

Tishah B'Av commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as several other major tragedies over the course of Jewish history. In addition to observing a full-day fast, we gather to read the book of Eikhah (Lamentations) and Kinot, elegies or dirges written at different periods of Jewish history.

Schedule for Tishah B'Av evening, July 29:
Fast begins: 8:14 pm
Ma'ariv (including Eikhah and Kinot): 8:30 pm
Please bring a flashlight to the evening reading.

Schedule for Tishah B'Av day, July 30:
Shacharit (including Eikhah and Kinot): 7:30 am
Minchah: 7:30 pm, followed by learning session
Ma'ariv and Break-fast: 8:44 pm

We will be joined on Thursday afternoon by Kehilat Hadar. The learning session will be taught by Jason Rubenstein and is entitled "Suffering from Separation: Loneliness and Desolation as Motifs of Jewish Mourning." Jason is a fourth-year rabbinical student at JTS and also holds an MA in Talmud from JTS. He is the Sho'el Umeshiv (a resource during Talmud seder) at Yeshivat Hadar.

The cost for the break-fast is $5. RSVP here so that we can provide the right amount of food.

Some special customs of Tishah B'Av:
As a sign of mourning, it is customary to avoid greeting others at services. Please take no offense! It is also customary not to wear leather shoes on Tishah B'Av. Talit and tefilin are worn during Minchah instead of Shacharit.

Food Drive:
Please bring sealed, non-perishable items to any of our Tishah B'Av services. Bins will be available at the entrance to the Social Hall. All donated food will benefit City Harvest.
