community learning for adults

At Shaare Zedek, we take learning seriously and provide regular opportunities for our community to learn from each other and from experts, on sacred texts and on subjects of local, national, and global import.

  1. Shiurim and Text Study: Rabbi Jonah Geffen, members of our community, and featured guests offer classes and shiurim (lessons) throughout the year to deepen our engagement with Jewish texts and wisdom, liturgy, and halachah (Jewish law).
  2. Member-Led Classes: Our members are a wealth of knowledge, offering talks and classes on areas of interest, as well as our beloved Shaare Zedek University series, which features experts in their respective fields.
  3. Opportunities to Encounter Israel: Generously supported by Shaare Zedek's David, Ursula, & Adina Michaeli Memorial Education Fund, we offer talks and other programming that bring us closer to Eretz Yisrael and keep us informed about current issues.
  4. Shaare Zedek Book Club: The club meets 3-4 times per year to discuss works of fiction on topics related to Judaism and Israel.
  5. Learning for Social Action: We gather to better understand diverse issues related to the plight of immigrants and refugees worldwide.
  6. Community Learning Partnerships: Shaare Zedek periodically partners with neighboring institutions to present mission-aligned adult education programs. Please note that many of these events take place at other locations.
